First meeting of the Serbian National Working Group
March 4, 2014

On March 4, 2014, members of the Serbian National Working Group (NWG) met for the first time at the premises of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Serbia (MAEPS).

To open the meeting, a representative from the Department of Climate Change of the MAEPS presented the purpose and activities of the LOCSEE project. Experts involved in the preparation of the Initial National Communication of the Republic of Serbia under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) then presented their assumptions and the potential results of climate modelling to reduce emissions from the waste sector. Waste management has been selected by the MAEPS and the NWG members as the main topic of the Serbian low-carbon policy paper, a LOCSEE project deliverable. The experts presented the structure of the waste model and explained how its development is aimed at estimating greenhouse gas emissions from waste treatment and disposal. Their presentation also illustrated how, in the context of the LOCSEE project, waste treatment and disposal are analysed using the model and broken down into specific technologies and options related to GHG emissions. Members of the NWG agreed to review the documents and provide comments before they are submitted to the National Observatory of Athens, the project partner responsible for the modeling exercise.

The 12 participants at the NWG meeting included representatives from the MAEPS, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Belgrade, the Serbian Environmental Protection Agency, the Faculty of Technical Engineering of the University of Novi Sad, the Municipality of Cacak, and two NGOs (CUPOR and FRAKTAL).
