Second Austrian NWG session
June 23, 2014

The Austrian National Working Group on Low-Carbon Policies met for the second time on June 23, 2014, in Graz, Austria, hosted by JOANNEUM RESEARCH (JR).

Opening the meeting, Mr. Andreas Turk introduced project leader EURAC and gave a brief overview of the LOCSEE project. He underlined that the focus of the project is on policy papers and specific concepts leading to nationally appropriate mitigation actions (NAMAs) in SEE countries. Mr. Turk presented a paper on existing NAMAs in SEE, which was then discussed by participants. Compared to Clean Development Mechanism projects, NAMAs provide good opportunities for foreign investments and climate actions in all SEE countries. Ms. Lettmayer (JR) presented a first draft of an Austrian policy paper. Drawing on examples of good and bad practices in Austria, conclusions were reached regarding support for developing NAMAs in SEE countries. Rather than individual measures, the clustering of measures in SEE countries has been seen as a better approach to implementation. Finally, all members of the Austrian NWG were invited to attend the Regional Policy Network meeting in Athens, held on October 2, 2014.
