Third Greek National Working Group meeting
May 29, 2014

The third session of the Greek National Working Group (NWG) on Low-Carbon Policies took place at the premises of the Ministry for Environment, Energy and Climate Change in Athens on May 29, 2014. Twelve of the 18 NWG members attended the meeting, which was chaired by the LOCSEE leader in Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).

Progress achieved in the framework of the LOCSEE project was presented and the group was informed about forthcoming project events (a Regional Policy Network meeting and stakeholders meetings) that will take place in Athens in the coming few months. The discussions then shifted to low-carbon policies in Greece and their potential contribution to achieving ambitious national low-carbon targets by 2030 and 2050, especially in light of existing national policy papers and the recent proposal made by the European Commission regarding climate change targets by 2030. In this context, the present situation and future prospects in the main categories of policy interventions (the promotion of energy efficiency, renewable energies, waste management, etc.) were analysed. The NWG then turned to the issue of good practices in the implementation of low-carbon policies and discussed potential additional examples to those already identified for Greece. Finally, NWG members agreed on the forthcoming activities of the group and decided to hold the fourth session at the beginning of autumn.
